We thought that selecting our first “Club of the Year” award last year (won by Welsh team Gwernyfed) was tough. This year it was even more difficult with 43 different clubs from 13 countries being put forward.
In a World Cup year, the Team of the Year almost always picks itself, and this year was no exception with the winners of the title picking up almost 50% of our public vote.
The purpose of this award has always been to highlight up-and-coming players, but one feature of modern women’s rugby is that 23 – the age limit for this award – barely seems young anymore. A 23 year-old would be one of the oldest members of the new Australian sevens squad, and fairly senior in the Canadian and New Zealand squads as well. However, for the time being, this award will remain restricted to players who were 22 or under on 1st September 2013.

More than 100 players were nominated for our Sevens Squad of the Year, highlighting the fast growing popularity of the game alongside the increased exposure for the world's leading players. As result we have expanded out squad this year from 10 to 12.

Former professional player and Waikato Coach Greg Smith has been appointed Head Coach of the New Zealand Black Ferns team through to the next Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2017.
Arguably the main excitement in the final weekend of Top 8 action was off the field as it was announced that two games in January will be televised for the first time, but there was still plenty of interest on the field as the the top teams aimed to go into the Christmas break with strong wins.

Australia’ s plan to dominate women’s sevens goes well beyond Rio. With his latest selections coach Tim Walsh reveals that he is looking ahead to 2020 in Tokyo – which is understandable given that the average age of his squad then will be the same as England’s is now.
