Women’s Six Nations likely to be postponed

Though a formal decision is set to be taken on Tuesday, it's understood the most likely outcome will be a delay until it is hoped the Covid-19 restrictions and high rates of tranmission have changed.

The women's competition faces different challenges to the men's competition, given the mix of amateur and professional players, making it extremely difficult for those involved to quarantine, bubble and isolate in around the competition. The U20s competition is also likely to shift to later this year.

The news comes as reports suggest that restrictions around sport are about to be tightened up significantly in France.

The Telegraphreport today that the final two rounds of the Champions Cup pool stages are to be postponed with the French government set to impose an immediate ban on cross-border elite sport.

If the women's tournament is postponed it will create a genuine scheduling headache, given the delayed European World Cup qualifiers and other World Cup events due to be played in the months ahead.

There will also be serious questions about whether teams will be prepared enough to play in the World Cup later this summer.
