USA and Canada youth teams dominate in Bahamas

We bring you an update from the Caribbean Championships being held this week in the Bahamas where the USA and Canada U20 sides are competing against the Cayman Islands and a combined Caribbean Islands team. The USA and Canada easily won their opening games and the video highlights a try from 16-year-old USA player Hayley Anderson

In a free scoring game, USA U20 romped away to an easy win courtesy of a 13 try spree, with tries from Chelsea Garber (3), Bui Baravilala (2), Katie Johnson (2), Kiki McNight (2), Ann Marie Bowlus, Candace Barley, Haley Anderson, Wendy Sherma and Katie Hathaway. A fine kicking display from Garber (6 conversions) and Baravilala (4 conversions), rounded off the natch for the USA, who ran excellent lines throughout and attacked with pace at all times.

Judging from the first two matches of the opening day's play, Canada U20 may need to raise their game if they are to defeat an impressive looking USA U20 in the final match on Friday evening.

Canada 43 Caribbean Select 0

A select Caribbean team put up a determined display against Canada U20s, though superior fitness, skills and organisation ensured that a victory for the North Americans was never in any doubt.

In a match that lasted well over two hours thanks to a tropical thunderstorm and lightening that halted the game for a considerable period of time, Canada opened the scoring with a try from Katie McNally, followed by further tries in the first half from Kelsey Willoughby, Jessica Jacobs and Kayla Moleschi to take a 22-0 half time lead.

Although not scoring in the game, strong tackling from the Caribbean Women and some opportunities running when they secured the ball, allowed the Selects to keep in the match throughout and occassionally pose a serious threat to the Canada try line. A second try for Willoughby and one each for Laura Murphy-Burke and Smith, with Murphy-Burke landing 3 conversions, ensured Canada a comfortable 43-0 win.
