Pool C: France & Aus keep on winning

Australia 25 Wales 3

Australia started well in this one, winning a scrum just outside the Wales 22 after the initial kickoff. Continuing to pressurise Wales they won a penalty and took the early lead, 3-0.

For brief moments, Wales were able to play openly inside the Australian half of the pitch but each time they were pushed back into their own 22 by strong defence. This resulted in a couple of tries from line outs and scrums close to the try line.

First, centre Sharni Williams broke the Welsh line after a 5m scrum out wide with fullback Ashleigh Hewson converting.

Another try came when Australia won the ball from a Welsh line out and with some brilliant passing out to the wing Tricia Brown scored a try in the corner.

Wales couldn’t seem to escape their own 22 without losing possession in the latter part of the first half. They did well however to stop the Australians from scoring more tries before the close of the first half. Australia led 17-0 at the interval.

After the break, again some wonderful quick passing from one end of the pitch to the other netted Australia a try - Brown touching down in the corner again almost immediately. Australia always had the edge in open play because of their ability to pass the ball crisply from one end of the pitch to the other, with their backs very sharp.

Wales did however make intrusions into the Australian half and when they did Australia conceded penalties. After the 50thminute, Wales were finally on the scoreboard with a penalty kick from centre Robyn Wilkins.

Wales had periods of open play inside the Australian half but each time the ball was turned over and the welsh were pushed back by the Aussie onslaught.

Hewson kicked another penalty between the posts to give Australia a lead of 25-3.

A couple of minutes before the end of the game Wales had the ball 5 minutes from the Australian try line but a turnover by Australia, proceeded to push Wales back into their own 22.

This summed up the match. Australia were able to turn over the ball quickly whenever Wales got into their half and easily push their opponents to the other side of the pitch were they were trapped for a large portion of the game.

So a disappointing few days for Wales overall, who are now out of contention to reach the semis, while Australia march on to the likely deciding pool game against France.

France 55 South Africa 3

France put in a fine performance to dispatch of South Africa and set up what will be a fascinating clash with Australia to decide who will top the pool.France began well with a Christelle le Duff penalty chance after three minutes. The experienced flyhalf missed but France continued to pile her pressure on.An excellent break from the powerful Assa Koita set the scene for what was to come for the rest of the half, with Manon Andre held up over the line only for a few minutes later Letitia Salles crashing over from a well worked forward drive.A superb set of passes and offloading them set up Elodie Portaries or the next try, with a raft of players involved in the lead up and when Celeste Adonis was yellow carded for South Africa their challenge got even tougher.Try number four  came soon after for France following another barnstorming run from Koita who would not be stopped metres from the line and then another excellent passing move, involving wing Camille Grassineau set up Le Duff ,who converted to make it 31-0Just before the break Siviwe Basweni got South Africa on the scoreboard with a penalty to make it 31-3 before the break.N'Diaye powered over the line minutes after the break with a barnstorming run.Siviwe Basweni created a half chance for South Africa soon after but France were back to normal soon after with a great finish from Le Duff . A brilliant move then involving Basweni and Zenay Jordaan almost resulted in a  fine score but the final pass was forward.

One more try from Grassineau rounded of an impressive win.
