New women’s rugby book published

Books on rugby are not rare. Type "rugby" into the books section of Amazon and over 9,000 titles are listed. Books on women's rugby, on the other hand, are a bit rarer. In fact, aside from one coaching manual and a few academic texts, there have been exactly two.

New women’s rugby book published

The first two books were both French.Des filles en ovalie : 40 ans d'histoire-an excellent, mainly text, history of the women's game in France from the 1960s -appeared in 2005 in the lead-up to the 2006 World Cup.

It was followed two years later byLa grande histoire du rugby au Féminin- a heavilly illustrated book, which covered similar ground but also took the story back to the 1880s,

Now a third book has appeared - and it is also in French, but again is heavilly illustrated enough to be enjoyed by non French speakers (especally if you have Google Translate to help).

The book - "Sœurs d'armes" (sisters in arms) - is part of a series called "Tronches de rugby" (Faces of rugby) produced byProvale, the French professional players union, toraise money for a charity that supports injuredplayers.

The book is a photographic study of the first choice French team from last season, with each player being placed alongside their choice of the leading player in the French men's team in their position.

Its a very interesting and - going by reviews - very successful idea, and certainly something anyone attending the World Cup should look out for.

We now await the first similar publication in English...
