While their main team was in Cape Town in the SVNS, Fiji’s development team were more than strong enough to win the region’s sevens championship.
Eight national teams took part alongside the Fijiana, including Kiribati making their sevens debut, and Niue returning to international sevens after 16 years away.
Kiribati – the 153rd national team to play sevens – had a tough debut with two 50 point loses, but Niue – who did not score a point in their previous incarnation – finished second in their pool after beating American Samoa.
Predictably, perhaps, the three pools were won by Fiji, Samoa and Tonga who all reached the semi-finals alongside the hosts, Solomon Islands.
Fiji powered through to their place in the final 36-5 against Tonga, while Samoa were too strong for the hosts.
The final was by far the closest game for Fiji’s second strong, but they were still too good for Samoa.
