England come good on Day 1 in Atlanta

New Zealand are again the top seeds after Day One, but only after they survived a shock, being within 30 seconds of defeat against Russia in their opening game beforelast-minute Portia Woodman try to clinch the win on Saturday - but they bounced back from that to record two 50-point wins over South Africa and the United States, almost as if they had a point to make. As it isSean Horan’s team are now unbeaten in 27 straight World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series matches. The USA took second, thanks to a 19-12 win over Russia, reversing the result in the last round.

Australia also took pool B comfortably enough, but their relatively low winning margins put them into the quarter-finals as third seed. France survived a scare against Fiji to finish runners-up.

So far so predictable, but it was Pool C that saw a possible change of guard as Canada had to settle for second place to England  a 26-10 defeat with Jo Watmore, Danielle Waterman and Alice Richardson contributing to the win in England's best day of the series

The quarter final line up sees New Zealand face Brazil, Canada take on France, Australia play hosts USA and England face a physical battle against Russia. The Bowl semi-finals will be contested between Spain and South Africa, before Fiji take on China.
