England and USA cruise through round one

ENGLAND v. CANADA

The England young guns, who have yet to be beaten this year, ran in seven tries in their win.

Bristols Rebecca Hughes and Saracens Hannah Gallagher ran in braces of tries whilst there were also touch downs for Natasha Jones, Katie Mason and Ceri Large. Bristol centre Amber Reed added three conversions.

England will face the tournament hosts and fellow round one victors, USA, on Sunday July 17 and Canada will take on South Africa.

England scorers:

Tries: Jones (6), Mason (10), Hughes (21, 79), Gallager (32, 51), Large (82)

Conversions: Reed (6, 80, 82)

USA v. SOUTH AFRICA

USA had two early chances in their game against South Africa to take a two goal penalty lead but both attempts flew wide and it was South Africa who led 3-0 after 17 minutes.

Those three points would be the only ones the visiting team would enjoy as the USA equalized within two minutes courtesy of Amelia Bizer.

South Africa's poor discipline gave the USA a player advantage for more than half of the game after a series of yellow cards and one offender received a red after receiving two yellows for repeated infringements related to dangerous play in the contact area.

USA scrumhalf Haley Anderson darted around a scrum and went in for a score ten minutes after the Bizer penalty, and Alycia Washingtons score eight minutes later boosted confidence giving the USA a 13-3 lead to go into the half.

Outside center, Amy Naber touched down late in the game with Alexandra Brown scoring the final try of the game with time winding down, ensuring victory for the USA.

United States scorers:

Tries: Anderson (29), Washington (35), Naber (73), Brown (79)

Conversions: Bizer (79)

Penalties: Bizer (20')

South Africa scorers:

Penalties: Pienaar (18)
