Canada cruise past USA in first test

Magali Harvey and Julianne Zussman both had hatricks in a game that was beyond the US by halftime.

Canada raced out of the traps and when Kalya Mack scored just a few minutes into the game it set in motion huge dominance for that opening half by the home side.

Canada were getting much reward out wide and Julianne Zussman finished after some good phase play to take the score to 10-0

The US looked like a side who hadn't played together much and despite enjoying some possess they struggled to put together their phases on attack.

Canada grabbed their third try of the game with Mandy Marchak powered past the US for a try to make it 17-0 with just a few minutes left of the first half.

The US pushed hard up the field but a turnover and good play from Magali Harvey helped Canada lead 22-0 at the break.

Canada stepped it up a gear in the second half. Harvey scored a wonderful 70 metre try showing her great pace to make it 29-0 and then Zussman picked up her second. Barbara Mervin was sent to the bin but it made little different with Zussman scoring her third.

US finally managed to keep the ball for a spell and looked close to scoring only for the ball to be turned over  and then Canada's Jessica Dovanne raced the entire length of the field to grab another try.

US centre Meya Bizer's powerful run saw her side grab their only points but when Dovanne scored her second it rounded off a huge win for the Canadians.

USA Coach Pete Steinberg said: “Canada played a wide and fast game and that was something that we couldn’t keep up with. They did a great job and it showed that we need to make some changes heading into Saturday. We struggled and they capitalised.”

Canada head Coach, Francois Ratier said: “We stuck to the game plan. We wanted to move the ball and we wanted to win at the contact areas. We did that today, so I am pleased by the result. More, I am pleased with the performance; we are going to try and be consistent and do it again on Saturday.”
