Training at the AIS from Monday to Thursday, the camp will see the Australians work in an elite environment on weights, fitness and inter-squad matches before travelling to the second-ever IRB-sanctioned sevens event, the IRB Womens Sevens Challenge Cup.
Head Coach Chris Lane will work with 20 players vying for the 12 places available to travel to Hong Kong.
Were hoping for a competitive environment. Theres plenty of work to do to get a spot on the team, Lane said.
Every camp is a learning experience for the girls, so theres a lot of testing and training to be done ahead of Hong Kong.
The womens tournament is held in conjunction with the mens HSBC Sevens World Series, which will this year feature four of the womens games played in the same venue at Hong Kong Stadium, providing a massive increase in exposure for the sport as the tournament is regularly sold out with crowds in excess of 40,000.
The womens four-day AIS camp is being held just a week after the Australian Rugby Union put the finishing touches on a new video aimed at school girls to help promote Womens Rugby Sevens, which stars Captain, Rebecca Tavo. Clickhereto view.
Australia last competed on the international stage last December in Dubai where they were beaten by England in the semi-finals.
