Amsterdam Sevens: Day Two Results

Canada were crowned champions of the Amsterdam Sevens for the second year running after a thrilling come-back in the final game against USA.

Trailing 19-5 with nine minutes to go, Canada grabbed three late tries to take out the win against their biggest rivals.

USA scored early through the outstanding player of the tournament Bui Baravilala with a second from Vanesha McGee.

Canada hit back with a try but another USA try at the start of the second half from Kelly Griffin saw the lead stretched to 19-5 and it looked a long way back for Canada.

But the Canadians then turned the match on its head. A pair of second-half scores by veteran star Mandy Marchak clawed them back to a 19 -17 score-line with only seconds to play.

With both teams out on their feet, it was left to Ashley Steacy to find necessary energy to score at the death and give the win to Canada.

The 26 - 19 victory is Canada's first tournament win since the 2012 Las Vegas Sevens in February, where they also defeated the United States.

Progress on Day Two

At the start of the day the top six were divided into two pools with each team playing each other once and the winner going straight through to the final.

Group one saw Canada, England and Netherlands and group two had USA, Spain and Australia

USA got off to a stunning start with a narrow victory over reigning World Champions Australia finishing 17-14. Bo de la Cruz scored early for Australia, Vanesha McGee hit back for the USA with two touchdowns before halftime and when captain Deven Owsiany raced over after the break it was too late for Australia despite a late score from De la Cruz.

In their second clash USA drew 12-12 with Spain but had done enough to go through to the final despite Australia beating Spain 10-7 win.

Canada made their way to the final via a physical 24-7 wins over the hosts Netherlands. The Canadians scores through Ghislaine Landry, Brittany Waters, Jen Kish and Julianne Zussman and then they too played out a 12-12 draw this one with England who had lost earlier to Netherlands 17-0.

Elsewhere South Africa finished 12th having not one a game at the tournament while Germany, finished 11th.

Scotland and Wales took 9th and 10th respectively with the Scots beating South Africa and Wales on day two, while Ireland recorded three wins on the second day to highlight their potential.

England defeated Spain 17-12 having lost a game and drawn a game earlier in the day to finish fifth, while Australia took third with a win over the hosts in their final match.

And so to the final where the defending champions Canada faced old rivals USA coming out on top and defending their crown.
