Allan ruled out of England squad

The experienced Michaela Staniford has been called up to the squad who are just weeks away from a World Cup on home soil.

Allan's departure is a blow given the solidity she gave England's midfield and she had been a mainstay in the starting lineup of late.

She is the second high profile player to lose out on her place at the World Cup to a knee injury with New Zealand's Amiria Rule having been ruled out lastweek.

Staniford is an ideal replacement however as she played a role in this year's 6 Nations campaign and is experienced at this level with 38 caps.

Staniford can comfortably play at both wing and centre and is a highly regarded 7s player with real pace.

England Head Coach Gary Street said: Its really unfortunate to lose Claire. She has been at the peak of her game during our world cup camps. However, we are also really fortunate to be able to replace her with Michaela who is one of the best outside backs in the world and who has a wealth of experience in international rugby.

I am sure that with youth on her side Claire will recover from this injury and play many more games for England in the future. From everyone in the England squad we wish her well.
