Qualifying for the World Cup is a huge reward for the Tunisians who have shown graet promise in recent seasons, beating a Dutch development team last weekend in a warm-up series in Holland, and having had good success in recent CAR tournaments.
On day one Uganda and Kenya went through the day unbeaten with Kenya defeating their eventual conquerors Tunisia in a narrow pool win.
The very late withdrawal of Cameroon meant Uganda's womenhad only two matches on Saturday, the Lady Cranes beating Zimbabwe 12-5 and then Senegal 22-0 to top Pool D. Kenya opened their campaign with comfortable wins over Morocco(36-0) and Zambia (36-0) before battling past Tunisia 7-5 to claim top spot in Pool C.
The results on day one saw Uganda set to face Tunisia and Kenya facing Senegal in the semi-finals on day two.
And the Tunisians massively upped their performances on the second day, defeating Uganda by three tries to one while Kenya were too good for Senegal.
The final was a tight tense affair as expected with a huge reward for the winners. Tunisia tool the lead with two tries but were reduced to 6 players early in the second half and Kenya taking their chances to score two tries but crucially neither were converted and Tunisia managed to cling on to win it 14-10. Tunisia are now the 12th team confirmed for the World Cup.Champions Australia, runners-up New Zealand, South Africa, USA and hosts Russia qualified directly with England, Spain, France, Netherlands, Ireland and Canada joining them through the regional qualifiers. The remaining places will be filled by theSouth American champions and three qualifiers from the Asian qualifier, which takes place in Pune, India, on 6-7 October.
